I think India is showing remarkable resilience. They’re trying to get back to business as usual. They were planning to open the stock market, which is not far from the Taj; they ultimately decided that that might have been a bridge too far, but they’re encouraging people to go back to work. That’s the best thing about an open society. They’re trying to project an image of resilience.

Political leaders are compelled to give vent to bravados on the TV for people who just ignore them or take them with a pinch of salt. All know that the fight against terrorism is an unequal one but, has to be fought as there is no other way to tackle it.

i guess we should make it a point that come what may WE WILL VOTE...........bureaucratic structure are indeed a major barrier but according to me if we remove the mental barrier within our self we can make a difference.........

Scary stats man...and a well thought out article
I agree with you that the major root cause of our problems lie in the bureaucratic structure, but then what are we doing about it? Most people in our age categories are away from home, in different parts of the country, and hence may not be voting. I for once, have not voted for the past 3 years..no one to blame but myself. The politicos have errected barriers that discourage someone like me to take the pains of re-registering as and when i move through contituencies. Its a well thought out plan, to thwart any progressive development and accountability.

Hell, those graphs look scary! I just calculated the totals from those graphs. Here goes:

93 MPs have pending criminal cases against them!

Considering that there are 540-odd MPs in the Lok Sabha, close to 17% of our MPs are tainted. WTF?

Absolutely .......... We the people should take the initiative as it is done in US........i guess with the passage of time people of India will become more aware about their rights and stuff............ i am optimistic that the current state of affair wont last for long.........

And where there is no political will every exercise is futile ! should that mean we become onlookers and take the beating. somebody had written in vinod sharma's post of negative votes. implementing our citizens rights and making people aware of them is the first place. remember tilak and how he organized the people community wise, that is how things should be done. i was amazed at how the citizens in this country learn of issues and educated themselves of policy, defence, etc , the opinions of the contesting candidates of their district at the democratic membership meeting in their county... much to be thought, planned and executed. there is always room. iniativeness and a sense of will and responsibility as citizens is much to be desired.

The really question is why wait till the water reaches upto the nose............... the easy way around will be to kill the problem at the initial stage it self............... isn't it ?

When the violence reaches a certain limit, the govt will impose draconian laws and unleash the might of the state to crush those challenging them. Remember Punjab?

Lot of money comes to this country to encourage terrorism. The government must stop this money flow to stop terrorism. Regarding politicians we have limited choices to elect.

Sachin, those are emotions of real Indians that our politicians are deaf to. Why? Only a few of us vocalise them on any worthwhile platform from where we can be heard by the many more like us who do not have either the courage or the means or the social status to express themeselves. That is why, when elections come, the kind of of material that your very disturbing graph shows, gets elected again and again.

At the very least, notwithstanding our political "affiliations" we should not vote for a tainted candidate., as you have suggested, and as you will so and influence others to emulate too.
The other suggestion which can work wonders is that of casting a "negative vote" as suggested by Kris.
